The Annual Minehead Raft Race is run by the Minehead Lifeboat crew to raise money for the RNLI. Next rears race, 2008, will be held on 24th August. The race is now in its 29th year and the is now the biggest free show in West Somerset, and believed to be the biggest sea raft race in the Country. Press Release 10/09/07Raftrace Stalwarts Recognised By The RNLIThe organisers of the annual Blue Anchor to Minehead Raftrace have been honoured by the RNLI with a framed letter of thanks from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for their fundraising efforts over the last 28 years. The event attracts entries from all over the United Kingdom with this year’s event raising in excess of £10,000 for the RNLI. The charity which relies solely on donations from the public needs in excess of £120 million per year to maintain its lifesaving service. The Minehead crew and station volunteers give up their own time to ensure that the event runs smoothly and it is now widely recognised as the largest of its kind in the country. Raft Race Committee Chairman Derek Williams commented “it is great to receive recognition from the RNLI and we are already looking at ways to make next year’s event bigger and better than ever”. Derek paid tribute to his fellow organisers and the many local businesses who sponsor the event “a large team of people work throughout the year to put this event on for the town and I would like to thank our principal sponsor Butlins and the local business community for their generosity”.
