Lifeboat Crews Warning After Holidaymakers Lucky Escape

Two holiday makers had a lucky escape when the inflatable toy they were onboard drifted out to sea on Friday.

Following a 999 call from a member of the public at approximately 16.25 HRS Minehead’s Atlantic 85 Lifeboat with volunteer helmsman Adam James in command was launched.

The two casualties had already drifted past the golf course and were heading towards Dunster Beach when a member of the public went to their aid and brought them safely back to shore.

Minehead Lifeboat Station Operations Manager Dr John Higgie warned of the dangers of using inflatable craft “these inflatable toys are not suitable for use in the sea and should be confined to swimming pools”.

Dr Higgie continued “they are extremely susceptible to changing wind and tidal conditions and the two people were extremely lucky to have been rescued thanks to the swift actions of a member of the public it could have been a very different story”
